SYGNUS STANDS FIRM IN ITS SUPPORT OF THE FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER THROUGH A DONATION OF J$500,000 FOR SCREENING AND FINANCIAL AID.
Sygnus, the leading alternative investments firm in the Caribbean, stands unwavering in its commitment to support the battle against breast cancer, the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths. On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, the firm made a generous donation of J$500,000 to the Jamaica Cancer Society (JCS) and its affiliated organisation, Jamaica Reach To Recovery (JR2R). This contribution aims to assist women and men across the island by providing free mammogram screenings and financial support for essential treatments.
For the fourth consecutive year, Sygnus demonstrates its dedication to this vital cause. This year’s donation of J$250,000 to the JCS will facilitate free mammogram screenings for a total of 45 women and men, enabling early detection of breast cancer—a crucial step in combating this disease. Mammograms are specialised breast imaging procedures and are typically recommended for individuals around the age of 40. However, affordability often presents a barrier to accessing these screenings.
“Sygnus’ continued support has been instrumental in our mission to fight breast cancer. The Jamaica Cancer Society thanks Sygnus for their ongoing financial contributions, which have significantly impacted our breast cancer screening programme. Thanks to their support, more Jamaican women have had the opportunity to receive timely screenings. Remember, being proactive in reducing your risk is crucial. Starting at age 40, schedule your annual mammogram—the gold standard in early detection. For those with a family history, consult your physician and start screening earlier. Additionally, young women, remember to perform monthly breast self-exams. With approximately 1,208 new cases in 2020, breast cancer affects 1 in every 21 Jamaican women. These statistics are alarming, but together, we can make a difference,” explained Michael Leslie, Acting Executive Director at the Jamaica Cancer Society.
For a second consecutive year, Sygnus has extended their support to the Jamaica Reach To Recovery and this year will be donating J$250,000.00 for their initiative which will go towards providing financial aid for those suffering from the disease.
Sandra Samuels, President of the Jamaica Reach To Recovery stated, “Sygnus’ generous support is a lifeline for JR2R, ensuring that many financially challenged individuals can access vital treatment, scans, tests, mammograms, and medication. Their contribution not only helps sustain our assistance programme but also fuels our commitment to continue the crucial work of our group. JR2R relies solely on fundraising and donations efforts, as we are not government-funded. We work tirelessly to make a positive impact on the lives of breast cancer survivors and those in need and are very thankful for Sygnus’ generous contribution.”
Jamaica Reach to Recovery (JR2R) is a breast cancer survivor group affiliated with Reach to Recovery International. They are a dedicated charity organisation run by passionate volunteers. Established in 1977 by Dr. Denise Thwaites and fellow survivors, JR2R now stands strong with approximately 120 members. While they do not act in the capacity of a doctor or counsellor, JR2R volunteers have gone through similar experiences, and are able to assist persons in successfully charting their road to recovery. Their services encompass counselling, financial assistance for various medical needs, including scans, mammograms, tests, prostheses, and bras, as well as support for minor operations such as needle biopsies. They also provide breast forms, special bras, and swimsuits, and advocate for better access to treatment and lower medication costs.
Breast cancer is a disease in which abnormal breast cells grow out of control and form tumours. If left unchecked, the tumours can spread throughout the body and become fatal. Though annually observed in the month of October, the fight still goes on for those battling cancer daily, and Sygnus has committed itself to not only assisting with early detection but survival as well.
“Our unwavering commitment to the fight against breast cancer has spanned over three years, during which we have contributed over J$1,000,000 to the Jamaica Cancer Society. This year, we continue our mission to make a meaningful impact on the lives of 45 individuals across the island through free mammogram screenings. Our commitment has once again extended to Jamaica Reach To Recovery and our donation aids those on the road to recovery. We understand the financial challenges faced by survivors, and we are proud to support JR2R’s mission. As we stand by our partners, the Jamaica Cancer Society and Jamaica Reach To Recovery, we also urge fellow members of the private sector to join us in the battle against breast cancer. Together, we can make a powerful difference,” shared Elizabeth James, Vice President and Head of Wealth and Client Strategy at Sygnus.
