Berisford Grey


Berisford Grey (known as Beris) is widely considered one of the region’s top investment bankers. As one of the founders of Sygnus Capital, he is living out his passion to create a leading Alternative Investments firm that uses creative approaches to unlock capital for clients.

Beris’s career was launched in the European Debt Capital Markets where he worked as an Associate Director in investment banking with particular focus on Securitisation and Structured Finance. After returning to the Caribbean, he held key positions at leading regional banks where he used his out-of-the-box thinking to generate game-changing results. This includes setting up and driving the Scotia Investments Capital Markets Unit to become a leader in the local market within 3-years and contributing significantly to the turnaround of CIBC FirstCaribbean Corporate & Investment Banking business between 2013-2016. Over the last decade he has raised over US$ 10 billion in financing for corporates and sovereigns across the region.

At CIBC FirstCaribbean, the largest regional bank in the English Speaking Caribbean, he held the posts of Managing Director and Executive Director of Corporate and Investment Banking where he oversaw a loan portfolio of US$3.0 billion USD in assets, and developed and executed regional strategy for the business to ensure competitiveness and long-term sustainability.

Prior to joining CIBC FirstCaribbean, Beris served as Senior Vice President of Origination & Capital Markets at Scotia Investments Jamaica Limited between 2010 and 2013. During this time, he executed some of the most innovative transactions in the local market including synthetic REIT financing structures and other first-of-its-kind project financing ideas.

Beris has the knowledge, talent and leadership skills to move Sygnus Capital forward. He holds an MBA in Entrepreneurial Finance from Vlerick Leuven Management School, Belgium and an MSc in Economics from the University of the West Indies. He has also completed the 1-year Executive Leadership Program at the Wharton School of Business in Pennsylvania, USA. Beris is currently the Chairman of the Caribbean Alternative Investments Association (CARAIA) Board.

Dr. Ike Johnson, PhD, CFA


Ike Johnson learned from a young age that if you put your mind to something, you will succeed. It wasn’t always this way. As a young man he shied away from “beating the books.” Today, he holds a PhD in finance from the University of Manchester Business School. Once Ike decided on his calling, there was no stopping him from seeing things all the way through. Now, he has his mind set on making Sygnus the top non-traditional financial solutions firm in the Caribbean.

Ike is a Co-founder and currently holds the title of Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer. He is no stranger to intensive work and study, and brings a fierce determination to succeed.

Ike’s career start was at Jamaica Money Market Brokers (JMMB), where he served as Market Risk Analyst, providing key q​uantitative ​analytical tools and introducing important ​risk ​monitoring and reporting mechanisms. He left JMMB for 3 years to pursue his doctoral studies in the UK, and then re-joined the company as their Senior Strategy Management Officer. More recently, Ike served as Assistant Vice President of Business Analytics and Product Development for Scotia Investments Jamaica, a subsidiary of ​the ​Scotiabank Group.

Ike has led or participated in major negotiations and deal structuring, including the successful acquisition of the Capital and Credit Financial Group at JMMB, the acquisitions of AIC Securities in Trinidad and Tobago and a privately held Jamaican Broker-Dealer. At Scotia Investments, his responsibilities included managing and executing the introduction of all brokerage and investment products across the firm, including structured notes, derivatives, and fund products. He also managed the execution and implementation of corporate strategic initiatives.

Jason Morris, CFA


Jason Morris is purpose-driven and relentless in his mission to create a lasting impact on businesses, people, and the economy. Driven by a passion to create nimble solutions addressing critical needs faced by entrepreneurs and investors, Jason isn’t afraid of a challenge. To establish Sygnus, he played a lead role in one of the largest equity raises done by a startup entity in Jamaica. Now, he is committed more than ever to working with team members to create a world-class “Sygnisian culture” that will revolutionise the way financial services are delivered in the Caribbean.

Jason received both his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (1998) and Master of Science in Economics (2000) from the University of the West Indies and has spent the last 14 years working in the Investment Industry. Throughout his career he has led or played a lead role in key investment decision on over US$1.1 billion in international investments, developed key private sector and public sector economic research during crisis periods in Jamaica, as well as provided investors with extensive cutting edge insights on local, regional and international financial markets through various events media channels and publications.

In the early part of his career, Jason worked as an economist with the Private Sector Organizations of Jamaica followed by a year at the National Water Commission as a Corporate Economist/Financial Analyst. He then spent eight years from 2002 to 2010 with the JMMB Group Limited. There he served as their Investment Research and Sovereign Risk Analyst and then Senior Investment Strategist and Portfolio Manager. Most recently Jason worked at Scotia Investments Jamaica Limited (SIJL), where he served as Vice President of Business Analytics, Portfolio Advisory, and Product Development from June 2012 to June 2016, and Assistant Vice President of Product Development from March 2010 to June 2012.

Simon Cawdery, CFA


Simon is Director, Sygnus Capital Limited, and Non-Executive Director, HLX Management/IPAF Group, Cayman. He is also the Founder/Director, Helix Group, Cayman; former Head of Investment Strategy/Senior Portfolio Manager at EFG Bank, Cayman; former Head of Discretionary Investments/Senior Portfolio Manager at Butterfield Bank (Cayman); and former Credit Analyst at Barclays (UK).

Gassan Azan Jr.


Gassan is the Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bashco Trading Company Limited, and MegaMart Wholesale Club. Under his leadership, Bashco, which he launched in 1990, has grown to twelve (12) stores in nine (9) parishes.

In December 1999, he started MegaMart (Jamaica), the Caribbean’s first wholesale membership club offering exciting one-stop shopping. Today, there are four (4) MegaMart superstores in Jamaica, located in Portmore, Kingston, Montego Bay, and Mandeville.

Gassan is also Chief Executive Officer of Sizzling Slots and SMWS Games Limited. He is a Justice of the Peace and has been awarded the Prime Minister’s Medal of Appreciation.

David McBean, PhD, BSc


Dr. David McBean was appointed Executive Director of the Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) on March 1, 2018.

Prior to joining the staff of the UWI, Mona, David served in several senior executive roles in varied industries including the airline industry, telecommunications (commercial & regulatory), IT, and media industries in the Caribbean. Past senior appointments include, Managing Director for the Spectrum Management Authority of Jamaica, Managing Director of Products & Services for LIME Caribbean, CEO of the CVM Media Group in Jamaica, as well as Vice President of IT for the former Air Jamaica.

David has served on several boards. Former board appointments include, Director of the Jamaica Tourist Board, e-Learning Jamaica, Nutrition Products Limited, University Hospital of the West Indies, AJAS, Lascelles de Mercado Limited, Supreme Ventures Limited and Mayberry Investments Limited. David is a Jamaica Rhodes Scholar.

Milton Brady, BBA, MBA


Milton is Chairman of the Board, Sygnus Capital Limited, and currently works as a Senior Advisor with Pan American Finance, where he uses his experience to provide advice and counsel to businesses and governments in the Caribbean region. Previous roles held by Milton include: Director and Global Head of Credit at SEB Merchant Banking (Sweden); President of SEB, New York (USA); Managing Director, Corporate and Investment Banking at CIBC FirstCaribbean (Barbados); Managing Director, CIBC FirstCaribbean (Jamaica); Chief Commercial Officer, LIME (formerly Cable & Wireless Caribbean); and Chief Risk Officer, NCB Group (Jamaica).
